Unlike many risky
modernization programs, the Huey II is a helicopter based upon proven
design and utilizes the durable existing UH-1H airframe and production
parts from current programs still in production. Every part for the
Huey II is in production today, which reduces your risk and guarantees
a ready parts supply to assure many more years of continuous service
and an infinite useful life span as components are overhauled or
exchanged at retirement.
The Huey II's increased
performance is achieved through an upgraded Lycoming engine, which is
the same engine that powers the AH- IS Cobra. The increased power
generated by the Lycoming T53-703 engine feeds the dynamic components
taken from the powerful Bell 212. This is the kind of power which
yields a 39% increase in hover on a standard day and over 275%
increase in hover capability on an extremely hot day at the high
temperatures found in real world environments.

A Modernization Program

Most operators who
currently fly the UH-IH can perform the modernization in their own
facilities. The Huey II modernization is essentially an assemblage of
upgraded components which are incorporated into your existing UH-1H
airframe. In about 12 weeks, the aircraft can be dismantled, the
transmission and the engine rebuilt, the new parts installed, and the
Huey II emerges ready to take its place in the operational fleet. Or,
if it better suits your needs, the modernization can be accomplished
in the United States by a highly qualified Bell authorized facility.

The TEXTRON Lycoming Powerplant
At the heart of the
Huey II modernization program is an upgraded version of the familiar
Textron Lycoming T53-L- 13B turboshaft powerplant. Since its
introduction, the T53 turboshaft has come to represent reliable and
outstanding hot day/high altitude performance as well as effective
modular technology for military and commercial applications throughout
the world.
The T53 was the first
turbine ever designed specifically for helicopter applications;
consequently it affords ease of maintenance and assembly
interchangeability with a negligible change in SFC's. These features
enable the T53 engine to be upgraded in the Huey II to provide an
increase of 400 SHP, 28% more takeoff power, and handle 642 lbs/291 kg
more payload with essentially the same fuel consumption as the current
UH- IH.

desirable efficiencies and components of existing successful aircraft,
the Huey II advances as a performance leader for multi-mission capable
transport helicopters. The Huey II modernization re-suits in a

Hover In Ground Effect (Takeoff)
The improved power
capacity of the Huey II modernization increases the IGE hover ceiling
39% on a standard day at 9,500 lbs/4,308 kg. Real performance benefits
are realized on a hot day (ISA + 20° C), when a Huey II achieves a
275% increase over the UH-iH in hover ceiling at 9,500 lbs/4,308 kg
gross weight.
The Cost Efficient Solution
The improved reliability and maintainability of the Huey II has resulted in a helicopter that requires significantly less maintenance touch time than that for the UH-1H. This produces a substantial savings, as shown below, and vastly improves operational ready rates for the field commanders.
Overhaul requirements for Huey II major components have been greatly reduced from the UH-1H by using commercial Model 205/212 parts. This greatly reduces maintenance requirements and overall life cycle costs.
Based on a flying hour program of thirty hours per month, the Huey II program, including engine upgrade, pays for itself in less than ten years. With a 40-hour per month flying program, the payback period is reduced to less than seven and one-half years. The Huey II continues to save you money throughout the life of the helicopter.
